THE GLASS BEAD GAME (1982; rev., 1983)

Commissioned by the Louisville Orchestra for commercial recording on Louisville First Edition Records and premiered by that ensemble on February 11, 1983; Robert Bernhardt, conductor. Subsequently recorded on the Naxos label by the St. Louis Symphony with Leonard Slatkin conducting. Recipient of a 1984 Kennedy Center Friedheim Award for Orchestral Music. Selected by the U.S. Section of the League of Composers/International Society of Contemporary Music as an official entry to the 1985 ISCM World Music Days in Amsterdam. [23’]

SHADOWS: FOUR DIRGE-NOCTURNES (1990)

Commissioned by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and premiered by that ensemble on May 18, 19 and 20, 1990; Leonard Slatkin, conductor. Recorded as part of a 6-CD set available from the SLSO entitled “The Slatkin Years.” Subsequently recorded by the orchestra and Mr. Slatkin on the Naxos label. [17’]

AWAKING THE WINDS (1993)

Commissioned by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and Meet the Composer. Premiered by the SLSO on May 14, 15 and 16, 1993 and recorded by the orchestra on the Naxos label; Leonard Slatkin conductor. [13’]

AWAKING THE WINDS for Chamber Orchestra (1993)

Commissioned by the Cleveland Chamber Symphony and premiered by that ensemble on January 23 and 24, 1994; Edwin London, conductor. Recorded on the IU Music label by the Indiana University New Music Ensemble; David Dzubay, conductor. Subsequently recorded by the Cleveland Chamber Symphony and Mr. London for TNT Recordings. [13’]

BLOW OUT… (1994)*

Written as the opening fanfare for the St. Louis Symphony Society’s gala celebrating Leonard Slatkin’s fiftieth birthday.  Premiered on October 1, 1994 by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra; David Loebel, conductor. [3’]

WHISPERS AND ECHOES (1995)

Commissioned by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and premiered by that ensemble on September 22, 23 and 24, 1995; Leonard Slatkin, conductor. [18’]

INTO THE SUN for High Voice and Orchestra (1996)

Commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington, DC and premiered by that ensemble on September 12, 13, 14 and 17, 1996; Jon Garrison, soloist; Leonard Slatkin, conductor. [17’]

SLEEPERS AWAKE for Mezzo-Soprano, Percussion and Strings (1998)

Commissioned jointly by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and the Center for the Humanities at the University of Missouri, St. Louis.  Premiered on November 11, 1998 by members of the St. Louis Symphony and the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra; Katherine Lawton Brown, soloist; James Richards, conductor. THE MYSTIC TRUMPETER (1999)

Commissioned by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and premiered by that ensemble on April 15, 16 and 18, 1999; Hans Vonk, conductor. Recorded by the SLSO and Mr. Vonk on the Naxos label. [13’]

SYMPHONY NO. 1: A WHITMAN CYCLE (2000)

Commissioned by the Brevard Music Center (North Carolina) and premiered by the BMC Festival Orchestra on June 25, 2000; David Effron, conductor. [19’]

AUS SCHWANENGESANG (2001)

Commissioned jointly by the North Carolina Symphony and the Canton Symphony Orchestra in memory of Peter Worsley.  Premiered in North Carolina on March 21, 22 and 23, 2002, and in Canton on March 9, 2003; Gerhardt Zimmermann, conductor. Recorded on the Naxos label by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra with Juanjo Mena conducting. [18’]

MÄRCHENBILDER (2005; rev., 2008)

Commissioned jointly by the Koussevitzky Music Foundation and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra to celebrate the ISO’s 75th anniversary.  Premiered in Indianapolis on May 6 and 7, 2005; Mario Venzago, conductor. Premiere of revised version given on December 3 and 4, 2008 by the Musikkollegium Winterthur (Switzerland) with Mr. Venzago conductiong. [ca. 18’]

LAMENTATIONS (pour la fin du monde) for Alto/Soprano Saxophones and Orchestra (2005-06)

Commissioned by Eugene Rousseau and the 14th World Saxophone Congress, Ljubljana, Slovenia. Premiered by Mr. Rousseau and the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra in Ljubljana on July 5, 2006; David Itkin, conductor.  Additional support provided by a grant from the “New Frontiers in the Arts and Humanities Program” at Indiana University, Bloomington. Recorded by Mr. Rousseau and Mr. Itkin on the Jeanné label with the University of North Texas Symphony Orchestra. [16’]

 

CONCERTO FOR PIANO AND ORCHESTRA: "From Noon to Starry Night" (2010-11)               Commissioned jointly by the Barlow Endowment for Music Composition, the                       Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and the Indiana University Jacobs School of                   Music to celebrate the one-hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Indiana                 University Department of Music. Premiered by the Indianapolis Symphony on                     January 7, 8 and 9, 2011 and recorded by the orchestra on the Naxos label;                       Marc-Andre Hamelin, soloist; Gilbert Varga, conductor. CANTI GUERRIERI ED AMOROSI (2012-13) -- WITHDRAWN                                                       Commissioned by Meet the Composer (Commissioning Music/USA) for a                            consortium consisting of the Canton Symphony Orchestra, the Breckenridge                      Music Festival Orchestra, and the Austin Symphony. Premiered in Canton on                     March 23, 2013; Gerhardt Zimmermann, conductor [20'].  Work withdrawn from                   publication in 2019.

Premiered by the                  American Modern Orchestra at the Mostly Modern Festival in Saratoga Springs,                  New York on June 23, 2019; David Amado, conductor. [17’]

 

from YET ANOTHER SET OF VARIATIONS (On a Theme of Paganini): “Il regalo di Fornaio” (1996/2019)                                                                                                                       Commissioned by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, National Symphony                           Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Nashville Symphony, and the Orchestre               National de Lyon in celebration of Leonard Slatkin’s 75th Birthday [2’]. Complete                 work written jointly with a number of invited composers (John Corigliano, Joan                   Tower, William Bolcom, Joseph Schwantner, et al) [17’]. Premiere performances                  scheduled by each orchestra in turn during the 2019-20 concert season with Mr.                 Slatkin conducting. Performances by Detroit, Nashville, and Lyon cancelled due to              COVID-19. 

 

TRE CANZONE for Chamber Orchestra (2020)                                                                             Written for the Indiana University New Music Ensemble; David Dzubay, conductor              [18'].
